POST-OPERATIVE REHABILITATION

Post-operative physiotherapy (post-op rehab) is crucial for recovery after surgery. It helps restore mobility, strength, and function, while reducing pain and preventing complications like scar tissue formation. The specifics of your rehab will depend on the type of surgery you’ve had, but here’s a general guide to what post-op physio rehab typically involves:

Your physio will assess and determine what stage of recovery you are at and take into consideration any specific instruction from you surgeon.   We can offer home visits on the early stages of your rehab if you are unable to attend the clinic. Home visits are usually subject to a 6mile radius of the clinic but can be discussed.

1. Early Stage (0-4 Weeks Post-Op)

  • Goal: Manage pain, reduce swelling, and maintain joint mobility.

Common Focus:

  • Gentle range of motion exercises to prevent stiffness.
  • Light stretching and mobility exercises to restore basic movement.
  • Education on posture, positioning, and how to move without straining the surgical site.
  • Use of ice and elevation to manage swelling.

2. Mid Stage (4-8 Weeks Post-Op)

  • Goal: Build strength and endurance, improve functional movement.

Common Focus:

  • Progressive strengthening exercises for the muscles surrounding the surgical site.
  • Controlled weight-bearing exercises if applicable.
  • Focus on improving stability and balance.
  • If the surgery was joint-related, functional exercises like squats, leg lifts, or walking might be included.
  • Continued soft tissue work (massage, gentle mobilizations) to reduce scar tissue build-up and improve tissue flexibility.

3. Late Stage (8+ Weeks Post-Op)

  • Goal: Return to full function, improve strength, flexibility, and endurance.

Common Focus:

  • Higher-intensity strengthening and functional exercises to mimic daily activities.
  • Cardiovascular exercises (e.g., stationary bike, walking, swimming).
  • Sport-specific rehab if the surgery was related to an athletic injury.
  • Work on agility, coordination, and fine motor control if needed.
  • Gradual return to normal activities and work tasks.

4. Ongoing Maintenance (6 Months and Beyond)

  • Goal: Ensure long-term strength, flexibility, and injury prevention.

Common Focus:

  • Regular strengthening and stretching to maintain results.
  • Activity modification if needed to prevent overuse injuries.
  • Education on lifestyle changes or ergonomic adjustments.
  • Ongoing exercises and perhaps a follow-up program to keep improving overall mobility.

General Tips for Post-Op Physio:

  • Consistency: Follow your therapist's instructions and do your exercises regularly to maximize recovery.
  • Listen to Your Body: Avoid pushing through severe pain. Discomfort is normal, but sharp pain could indicate an issue.
  • Stay Patient: Recovery takes time, and the process is gradual. Keep in communication with your physiotherapist for adjustments based on your progress.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: Proper hydration and a balanced diet can aid in tissue healing and muscle recovery.
